SERVILE SECT "Realms Of The Queen" limited LP

Arriving before the holiday's hopefully will be the vinyl version of SERVILE SECT's "Realms Of The Queen" album (released on CD by Ecstatic Peace). It will be limited to 250 copies on glow in the dark clear splattered vinyl and housed in a jacket designed by the always impressive Viraloptic! Ordering info will be up shortly in the store. Words can not describe how excited we are to unleash this amazing piece of vinyl unto the world.

In other SERVILE SECT news, as a companion to their "Trvth" album Handmade Birds will be releasing the bands newest offering "Svrrender" on cassette only. Touted as their "most exciting material yet" this will be limited to 250 copies with art by Demian Johnston. And if that wasn't enough, they will also be releasing a split cassette of Saturn Sadness (Luke from Servile Sect) and Golden Raven (Nhate from Servile Sect). The split will be limited to only 100 copies. Again these can be ordered from Handmade Birds NOT King Of The Monsters. Personally I can't wait to hear both releases!

HORDES "Abarognosis"

After a few setbacks and delays it looks like the HORDES "Abarognosis" 7" will be out on December 12th. Preorders will ship out as soon as all the components arrive and there are still a few copies available on red marble in the KOTM store so move fast if you want one.

Southern California's HORDES are being raved about everywhere. Making it on Toxicbreed's Funhouse list of “Must Hear” Bands Of 2011 as well as incredible reviews on CVLT Nation and American Aftermath. Clearly proving that you need to own a copy of "Abarognosis".

If you live in the surrounding Los Angeles area be sure to catch them at the record release show on Saturday January 21st alongside Nails, Creatures, Skin Like Iron and The Funeral Pyre. They will of course have copies of the record plus new t-shirts and a other goodies.

Stuff And Things - A Brief Update Of Upcoming Releases

NY CLENCHED FIST recording is complete and sounds awesome. Don Fury worked his magic (as always) and this is being sent off to the pressing plant very soon. More details as they become available.

HORDES recording is nearly complete and we are shooting to have the 7" out by late October / early November. Cvlt Nation did a great write up on them recently and you can check it out HERE.

ENEWETAK discography has been put together and mastered by Dave Shirk at Sonorous Mastering and everything sounds incredible. Waiting to finalize the artwork and then it gets sent off to the presses. Our original plans of an October / November release might have been underestimated as it is looking like it might be delayed a bit. Sorry about that but trust me, you wont be disappointed with the final product.

Finally, we would like to announce two new projects we are working on...

Clenched Fist were a great, but short-lived hardcore band with members in NYC and North Jersey. Kind of a NY hardcore supergroup with members that were in (and would go on to be in) Mental Abuse, Breakdown, Born Against, Life's Blood, Citizens Arrest, Jersey Fresh and Outgroup.

The band formed in '86, and before Perry joined, the infamous Sid Sludge of Mental Abuse was on vocals. Apparently there are rehearsal recordings that exist with Sid on the mic. Maybe one day they'll surface. After Dave Jones left the band, Daryl Kahan and Todd Waladkewics both filled in on drums for a while.

I discovered Clenched Fist back in '87 on Pat Duncan's radio show on WFMU. The songs "Eagle Eyes" and "At the Beach" were on Pat's playlist most Thursdays (which i taped every week religiously). It was only a couple years ago that i was able to get a copy of the entire demo, and the live set. This stuff sounds just as good as it did over 20 years ago.

The demo was recorded in New Jersey in '87. The song "Inner Strength" would later be the template for the song "Eulogy" by Born Against, which was released on a 2-song 7" (the other song being a cover of X's "Riding With Mary") on Vermiform Records in 1990. It came with issue #37 of Sam McPheeter's zine "Dear Jesus". The last track on the Clenched Fist demo, "Get Away" was originally an Outgroup (pre-Mental Abuse) song. Mental Abuse would also play this song live on occasion, and it's probably been covered by bands countless times. It's a NJHC classic.

CF also played shows with Youth of Today, Sheer Terror, Dag Nasty, Token Entry, and many other great NYHC bands.

Perry Pelonero was in Krieg Kopf (for about 2 weeks). Dave Jones was in Mental Abuse, Outgroup, and most notably played drums on Agnostic Front's classic "Victim in Pain" album. Chris Fist was in Breakdown, Mental Abuse and Life's Blood. Neil Burke was in Life's Blood and Born Against. Daryl Kahan was in Citizens Arrest, Born Against, True Colors and many death metal, black metal and powerviolence bands. Todd played in Jersey Fresh. Sid Sludge played in Mental Abuse and Outgroup (and i'm still not sure if he actually passed away).

Members of Clenched Fist have recently reformed, and Chris Fist is in the process of writing material for a new ep. It's going to kick ass so keep your eyes peeled.

ENEWETAK Discography Announced

After years of delays by other labels and the impending release of their final seven inch, Easyrider Sessions Vol. 3, I am happy to announce that KOTM will be releasing the "complete" ENEWETAK discography later this year!!! When I say "complete" I mean complete...the discography will contain all their studio recordings along with a ton of previously unreleased and unheard to most recordings. We will begin sifting thru the extensive pile of DATs, cassette's and reels soon to figure out what makes the cut but expect this release to be a comprehensive look at one of hardcore's greatest.

This release is for me why KOTM records started, to put out friends bands that I thought the world should hear and while they may no longer be a band, hopefully this release will expose this amazing and often overlooked band to a new crowd of people and will give lifelong fans a chance to have everything in one package accompanied by a shit ton of previously unreleased songs.

The purple edition (limited to 110 copies) of "Upon The Gravehill" have all been shipped to those lucky enough to order a copy before they sold out. We still have blue vinyl copies (limited to 550) available in the webstore so order quick as they wont last long either.

The vinyl for the ALTARS / HALLA split should be here next week. There was a little hold up on the artwork but that has all been sorted out and we are hoping to receive the covers in about three weeks. Once we get a definite ETA on them we will put up the pre-order info for that.

Ave Satanas! - ALTARS / HALLA split

A long time friend dropped me a line out of blue a few weeks back, asking me about the label. I explained to him my recent decision to restart the label after a few years hiatus and he in turn asked if I had heard of his latest project, ALTARS. My eyes immediately widened as the only thing I had been able to obtain by them prior was a one-sided 7" released on Down in The Ground Records entitled "Ewig Verloren". I had no idea that someone I knew was responsible for the cacophonous and violent musical outbursts committed to that release. He went on to explain that they just recorded for a split single with a band from Iran (!!!) called HALLA (Allah spelled backwards) and we immediately forged a plan to release this project onto the world. If you are unfamiliar with either band and enjoy raw noisy black metal than I strongly suggest you check out the links above. As for this project, it will be limited to 350 copies and is underway now to hopefully be available sometime in July / early August for consumption.

The reviews are in! Everyone including the fine folks over at Terminal Boredom are singing the praises of Perfectly Round Records latest release for EARTHMEN & STRANGERS. See for yourself...

Earthmen & Strangers "Painter" 7"
Jay Reatard and Ryan Wong always tended to head in the same directions, whether it was actually playing vicious punk together in the Reatards or going synth-punk before it was hip with Lost Sounds/Destruction Unit or coming around to punk with pop hooks via Jay's solo career and Ryan's current outfit Earthmen & Strangers. I don't think one was following the other in any way, I just think they had/have similar visions and interests which took them to the same conclusions. I honestly feel the E&S LP did a better job at the 'Blood Visions' sound than Jay did himself, for what it's worth. This new single (originally meant to be released on Jay's revitialized Shattered Records) takes things a step forward from there, much as Jay's final records did. "Painter" shows more complex songsmithery and detailed guitar pop with a fragile agressiveness, taking some influence from favorite Kiwi-pop sources. B-Side is "Space on Our Hands" which continues the same themes, upbeat guitar pop showing some delicate tension and played with plenty of finesse. Not a rocker by any means, but a beautifully constructed pop song with guts. Well done Mr. Rousseau. While I don't want to insinuate anyone will ever replace Jay Reatard, I think a lot of his ideas and soul carry on via Ryan, one of his longstanding bandmates and friends who he shared very similar ideas with for what they wanted to do with rock music. Ryan's had a long and illustrious career on his own anyway, which should be reason enough to pay attention. Scum stats: 500 pressed on purple vinyl, 6 test presses with alternate color sleeves. Comes in one of those resealable mylar bags Arizona boutique labels seem to have a real fetish for and has some very creative obi-strip style packaging/art.(RK)

Playing a dark and ferocious mix of hardcore, metal and thrash, ROYAL MONSTERS will unleash their second single for King Of The Monsters in March/April. In the meantime be sure to check out their first single released on New Age Records last year.

ELDERS one-sided LP

Barbarous and savage hardcore the way we like it here at KOTM, Arizona's ELDERS take cues from some of the best (early Black Flag and vintage DC hardcore (S.O.A., Void, etc). Recently unleashing a demo onto the world, plans were quickly forged to release a single on a friends label (with new songs and some re-workings of demo tracks) followed shortly after by a one-sided LP of new material for KOTM to be released before the summer if not sooner.

On my most recent hiatus from KOTM, I released a record with three other friends under the moniker "Perfectly Round Records". The first release collects the last recordings of TCT and was put out in an addition of only 131 copies and in conjunction with my 35th birthday. Perfectly Round will continue to release singles in small lathe cut batches that if you don't jump on right away you will probably never see again. Doing this release also helped spark my interest to start up KOTM again.

Some fun facts about TCT...

-This single is limited to a mere 131 copies (49 on blue, 50 on pink, 2 on clear, and 30 test presses).
-Ryan's boyish good looks landed him a gig as The Wipers bass player for awhile. The fact that he can play bass helped too I guess.
-Zeke plays drums in Love As Laughter and can often times be seen hobnobbing with dudes from Modest Mouse.
-Minardi's love for drawing has gotten some of his work on a pair of Converse sneakers as well as almost punched in the face by sketching caricature's of art fair patrons outside Phoenix's best record store.

*Why so much you ask? The smaller the run of records the more expensive each unit turns out to be. With covers, pressing, labels, plates, shipping from the plant, etc. each of these records works out to be a little over $8 cost. Add postage to you the customer and you get a $10ppd record. Like I have said before I am not in this to make money, but breaking even is always nice.

Don't Call It A Comeback

You would think by now I would have moved on, my passion for music would have died and I would have "grown up" alas that is not the case. I am returning from my second (or third?) hiatus to "restart" the label again. Why bother you ask? That is simple, I still love music and this is my chance to share and expose others to the things I love. I have never "gotten rich" off of this and that was never the point or motive. Since I started doing the label back in 1994, this scene has changed and in opinion not for the good. These last few years have especially been rough and painful to witness. It seems every band has a manager, every band has a booking agent, every band wants to be the next "so and so". On the surface the DIY Punk community looks dead but if you dig a little deeper, look beyond MySpace, Pitchfork, and whatever other "hip" vehicle to expose our culture to music, you will find a thriving underground community who believes the message is just as important as the music. A community that believes in making lasting friendships and bonds with a handshake and conversation than a lawyer and a contract. That is why I do it.

This blog will serve as the main outlet for King Of The Monsters. Old and new releases will be listed on this site for sale, general news about upcoming releases, and whatever else I can come up with. The most important part of this blog/website is to (I hope) rekindle old friendships that I let lapse as well as make lasting new friends.
